Back in 2018, Amazon built an AI to screen resumes. But after realising it was penalising resumes that included the word “women’s” or came from all-women’s colleges, they shut it down. The model had simply absorbed years of biased hiring patterns and repeated them.

We run tests where we change just one thing about a profile, like switching the gender, and check if the AI’s decision changes. If it does, we’ve got work to do. That tells us bias is creeping in through the back door, and we fix it.
